Introduction to Flemish Giant Rabbits

As the name suggests, Flemish giant rabbits are gigantic. If one comes to you from afar, you might mistake it for a dog. They are broad and long with a different physical appearance than other rabbit breeds.

Flemish giant rabbits are considered the biggest rabbit breed. They have giant heads with erect ears and thick fur. Their fur is glossy and evenly coated all over their body. The fur comes in the following seven colors:

  • Black
  • White
  • Blue
  • Fawn
  • Sandy
  • Steel Gray
  • Light Gray

All these fur colors come with different eye colors as well. Usually, Flemish giant rabbits weigh about 14-15 pounds. Some have also been recorded to weigh above 20 pounds.

Habits

Flemish giant rabbits are affectionate and make a good breed to keep as pets. Some of their physical features make them a good fit for detecting predators such as their long ears for exceptional hearing and good eyesight.

People originally raised Flemish giant rabbits for their meat and fur around the 16th century. Even though they are giants, they are quite gentle with everyone that treats them correctly.

This breed is one of the most affectionate among rabbits. Flemish giants are even gentle to children. They will sit on the owner’s lap hoping to be petted by them.

Due to this reason, they are also called β€œGentle Giants”.

Their sweet, calm and docile nature makes them a perfect companion and family pet. They are intelligent enough to learn to use the litter box.

Flemish giants are large and muscular and can cause real damage if they feel at risk or frightened.

Diet

Their diet mainly consists of hay and grass. About 70% hay and the grass is enough for them. 10% treats and 20% protein pellets are perfect for Flemish giants. They require fresh water at all times as they can’t manage heat well.

Their digestive system is sensitive and doesn’t get used to new foods instantly. They are prone to developing digestive problems so introduce new foods gradually into their diet. Only use fresh items to feed them.

How to Choose a Good Rabbitry for Buying Flemish Giant Rabbits?

Finding a reputable rabbitry for buying Flemish giant rabbits is important. Here are a few factors to consider before choosing a rabbitry!

Certifications

The rabbitry must be a member of either ARBA or NFFGRB. Being a member of these organizations makes the rabbitry a trustworthy one. It means that they follow the standard SOPs suggested for raising and breeding their rabbits.

If a rabbitry isn’t a member of any reputable organization, trusting it would be hard. Therefore, always ask the rabbitry about their registration with different organizations.

Color of Flemish Giant Rabbits

Only buy a color of a Flemish giant rabbit that is accepted by ARBA and NFFGRB. Some fake breeders have more than seven colors of Flemish giant rabbits but those rabbits aren’t healthy and authentic.

The following seven colors are recognized by NFFGRB:

  • Black
  • Blue
  • White
  • Fawn
  • Light Gray
  • Steel Gray
  • Sandy

Usually, breeders have blue, black, sandy, and fawn rabbits. However, all the above-mentioned colors are legit for Flemish giant rabbits.

Now you know some of the best breeders for Flemish giant rabbits in the USA, you can buy an authentic rabbit. These breeders have show-quality as well as pet-quality rabbits.
